The distraught parents of a 23-year-old woman killed falling down stairs at a Halloween costume party are seeking half a million dollars in compensation for her death.

James and Deborah Duskey have launched a lawsuit against the party's hosts and the exclusive Chicago hotel where it was held.

Their daughter, Megan Duskey, was one of 2,000 guests at the Palmer House Hilton's Haunted Hotel Ball celebrating the festivities with her girlfriends.

She slipped and fell while trying to slide down a staircase, toppling from the mezzanine-level banister and plummeting down four storeys to the basement.

Mr and Mrs Duskey filed their lawsuit in Cook County on Tuesday, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

It suit names Hilton Worldwide, the Palmer House Hilton, Surreal Chicago and Adrenaline Y2K  and claims their daughter died as a result of their combined negligence.
