(WFLA) Police have arrested a father after he dropped off his kid at school with a backpack full of marijuana.
St. Pete Police Officers responded to the Campbell Park Elementary School on 7th Avenue South after a 6-year-old kindergartener showed a teacher the bag of weed and a scale that was in his backpack.
The father of the child, Larry Cornelius Stephens, 25, came back to the school a little bit later to get the dope. By that time, police had already been notified and confiscated the marijuana and scale. Stephens left campus after he realized the pot was gone.
According to the arrest affidavit, before leaving the school, Stephens told a witness that he had come back to the school to get the marijuana because he uses it to "take care of his business and take care of his family."
Police were looking for Stephens when his lawyer took him in to St. Pete Police headquarters.
Stephens is charged with child abuse and posession of marijuana with intent to sell. He is currently in Pinellas County Jail. He admitted that the marijuana was his, but Stephens told police it was for personal use. The bag weighed 89 grams, which is a felony.
