Marina & Soko
Marina & Soko
Soko is Stefanie Sokolinski, a French actress and musician who enjoyed some radio success in Denmark, Australia, Belgium, and the Netherlands in 2007 with the single "I'll Kill Her." Marina is Marina Vello (aka Marina Ribatski and MC Marina Vello), a vocalist and DJ who was formerly a member of the Brazilian indie ensemble Bonde do Role. In January 2009 post to her MySpace blog, Soko stated that she was quitting music, proclaiming herself "dead" in the process. Her retirement didn't last long, however; Soko teamed up with Marina a few months later, and the newly formed duo came out with their first 7" single, Mum, by the time summer rolled around. Produced by Radioclit, and making liberal use of a sampled bassline from War's "Low Rider," the single sounded very much like Yelle, Cof Cof, and (perhaps unavoidably) Bonde Do Role. Mum was released via Pure Groove! and IHEARTCOMIX in August 2009. ~ Margaret Reges, Rovi
